Bauerfeind Valve Blocks
For decades, Bauerfeind valve blocks have been regarded by professional brass players and instrument makers as the finest piston valve systems available. Designed and produced in Germany, these valve sets earned an international reputation for their precision engineering, durability, and distinctive playing feel.
Valves built in the Bauerfeind tradition are widely recognized for their exceptionally fast and light action, combined with extremely tight manufacturing tolerances. This results in a valve system that feels remarkably responsive, with a quick return and a highly controlled airflow through the instrument. Many musicians describe Bauerfeind valves as having a very clear signature in articulation and response, allowing notes to speak immediately while maintaining stability and efficiency in the air column.
A defining element of the Bauerfeind philosophy has always been precision. The pistons and casings are manufactured with extremely small tolerances to ensure minimal air loss and optimal alignment. This level of craftsmanship contributes not only to mechanical reliability but also to the playing characteristics that musicians value: clarity, efficiency, and consistency across the full range of the instrument.
Because of this reputation, Bauerfeind valve blocks were used for many years by a number of highly respected brass instrument makers. Among them were builders such as Eclipse, Taylor, Hub van Laar, Inderbinen, Schagerl, and Thein. Their choice to incorporate Bauerfeind valves reflects the trust instrument makers placed in the engineering and performance of these components.
Like these other instrument makers, Adams Brass had worked closely with Bauerfeind for many years, sourcing valve blocks for its own production and maintaining a strong professional relationship with Gerald Babilon, who led the company. Adams seized the opportunity to secure the future of this highly specialized craftsmanship by acquiring the company.
To ensure that the knowledge and tradition would continue, Adams’ instrument builders were trained directly in Germany, working alongside Bauerfeind craftsmen to learn the techniques, processes, and philosophy behind these renowned valve systems. Today, more than a decade later, the production of Bauerfeind-based valve blocks has been fully integrated into Adams’ manufacturing in the Netherlands.
Gerald Babilon remains involved in the ongoing development and refinement of the system, helping to preserve and guarantee the original spirit of Bauerfeind while allowing the technology to continue evolving.
The result is a valve system that carries forward the legacy of Bauerfeind: precision-built piston valves that combine speed, reliability, and a distinctive playing feel trusted by professional musicians worldwide.
