Hendrik-Jan Renes is the tubaïst of Rotterdam Philharmonic and professor at the CODARTS Conservatory of Rotterdam. He studied at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam with Adriaan Boorsma, former tuba player of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
At the age of 21 Hendrik-Jan Renes got the tuba position with the Limburgs Symfonie Orchestra (1979). In 1983 he went to the Radio Filharmonisch Orchestra, Hilversum. From 1988 he is the principal tuba in the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra where he works with famous conductors as James Colon, Kurt Sanderling, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The 20 years with Maestro Valery Gergiev as chief and guest conductor have been very special and inspiring.
Hendrik-Jan also plays many concerts with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Brass. He made several tours with the Netherlands Brass Quintet to the USA, Canada, Korea and Indonesia.
He played as a soloist with the Radio Filharmonisch Orchestra, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He recorded the Concerto for Tuba by Vaughan Williams with the Radio Filharmonisch Orchestra for the television.
