André Gilbert studied saxhorn and tuba with François Poullot, principal tuba of the Garde Républicaine Wind Orchestra, at the Rueil-Malmaison Conservatory. At the Paris Conservatoire, he was awarded First Prize in saxhorn (1981) and First Prize in tuba (1982).
He won Third Prize at the International Competition in Markneukirchen in 1984 and First Prize at the T.U.B.A. Competition in Austin in 1986.
At the age of 21, André Gilbert became principal tuba of the Concerts Colonne Symphony Orchestra, a position he held from 1980 to 1984.
Since 1984, he has been principal tuba of the Île-de-France Symphony Orchestra.
He also performs regularly with symphony orchestras in Paris and throughout France.
André has toured Italy, Spain, Germany and Japan with French Brass. He is also a member of Aeolus Brass Band, a multiple winner of the French Brass Band Championship.
Since 1996, he has taught saxhorn, euphonium and tuba at the Rueil-Malmaison Regional Conservatory.
Since 2012, he has been assistant professor of tuba at the Paris Conservatoire.
