Adams Musical Instruments - Together in Music

Tom Challinor

Tom Challinor was born in Wrexham, North Wales. His musical journey began at the age of 11 after his father introduced him to a series of local brass band concerts. The sound and energy of those performances sparked a passion for brass music that quickly shaped his ambitions. Throughout school, Tom was driven by a clear goal: to build a career as a musician within HM Forces.

Tom's Adams gear

From the first note, my Adams TB1 stood out with its distinctive presence and rich, resonant timbre. The craftsmanship behind it is exceptional, and its versatility gives me complete confidence across wind band, brass band, and commercial settings.

At 18, he earned a place in the Band of the Coldstream Guards, marking the start of a career that would take him to some of the world’s most iconic stages and ceremonial events. His time with the Coldstream included tours to Japan and Australia, performances at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Musically and personally, these years were transformative, and Tom then became Principal Trombone, leading the section through major engagements and high-profile performances.

Seeking new challenges and a return to his brass band roots, Tom later joined the Kings Division Band — the British Army’s first professional, full-time brass band. Alongside his military role, he enjoyed spells with Leyland Band and Desford Band, competing at the British Open, the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall, and deputising with leading bands across the North West and Yorkshire.

In 2023, Tom realised a long-held ambition by transferring to The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, where he now serves as Principal Trombone. Since returning to London, he has performed at the State Visit of the US President, the King’s Coronation, and toured internationally to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This chapter has also allowed him to continue refining his craft through study with internationally renowned trombonist Byron Fulcher.
