Jonathan Pippen
Jonathan Pippen is a UK-based freelance trombonist, conductor and Adams Artist.
Jonathan studied trombone at the Royal College of Music in London with Arthur Wilson, where he was awarded a Foundation Scholarship in 1997. He later continued his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music.

During his studies, Jonathan was appointed Principal Trombone of the Brighouse & Rastrick Band, contributing to their successes at the National Championships, European Championships and the All England Masters. He was subsequently appointed Principal Trombone of the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música in Portugal, where he remained until 2003.
Following his return to the UK, Jonathan established a freelance career performing with many of the country’s leading orchestras, including the Hallé Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, English National Opera and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has also appeared as Guest Principal Trombone with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. From 2007 to 2015 he was a member of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, where he served as Principal Trombone.
Jonathan is currently Principal Trombone of the Desford Colliery Band, with whom he won the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 2025. Alongside his performing career, he is Musical Director of Kidlington Concert Brass and Assistant Musical Director of Desford Colliery Band, and works regularly as a guest conductor and adjudicator.
As a session musician, Jonathan has worked with artists including Kiri Te Kanawa, Bryn Terfel, Madness, Max Boyce, Lea Salonga, Cliff Richard, Steve Hackett and The Who.
He held the Trombone 1 / Euphonium chair on the Mackintosh production of “Half a Sixpence” during its 2016–2017 run at the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End.
As a soloist, Jonathan has featured on BBC Radio – Listen to the Band on six occasions and was soloist on Tredegar Band’s award-winning album Dark Arteries. He also recorded Berio’s Sequenza V for the Royal Air Force Music album Going Solo.
Jonathan is Professor of Trombone at the London College of Music, Head of Trombone for the British Army (London District), and an examiner for MTB Exams.
