Vassilena Serafimova

Vassilena Serafimova was born into a family of musicians - her father, the percussionist Simeon Serafimov was her teacher during more than ten years, her mother Avgustina Serafimova - her teacher of musical analysis and polyphony. Her music studies began very early - at age six - at the Panayot Pipkov Music High School in Pleven, from which she graduated in 2004 with a Special National Diploma from the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, recognizing her achievements in music and culture.

Vassilena has since won numerous prizes in national and international percussion competitions. She was awarded the Grand Prix as a soloist at the 10th Annual "Music and Earth" International Music Competition in 2003, simultaneously winning First Prise with the Accent Percussion Ensemble. She followed these with the Marimba One Special Prize and Norsk and Classic Concert Music Group Prize in the International Marimba Competition in Linz, Austria; Second Prize of International Marimba Competition in Paris and the SPEDIDAM special prize for best foreign student in France; Second Prize for the 56th International ARD Competition in Munich; and First Prize in the 5th World International Marimba Competition in Stuttgart. Last year Vassilena has been awarded with the prize ¡°Young musician of the year¡± in Bulgaria. Just several months later she won the First prize as a member of Ensemble Argillos Percussion in International FNAPEC Competition in Paris. Her virtuosity, sensibility and musical ideas convinced the jury of the International FMAJI Competition to award her the Grand Prix of the competition, as well as the prize Pierre Salvi and the prize Je§Ñn-Paul Neu for the best interpretation of contemporary music piece. These last prizes will give her the chance to play as a soloist of five different orchestras in France during the next autumn.

Vassilena has been distinguished by the French pianist Chantal Stigliani, who also helped her to continue her studies under Sylvio Gualda at the National Conservatory of Versailles, France. These musical encounters in addition to master classes with remarkable musicians including Keiko Abe, Bogdan Bacanu, Peter Sadlo, Momoko Kamiya, Katarzina Mycka and more, have very much enriched her musical expression. She is currently a student at the Conservatoire National Sup¨¦rieur de Musique et Dance de Paris studying under Michel Cerutti. Vassilena is also one of the laureates of "Fondation d'Enterprise Banque Populaire" since 2007.

Sensitive to painting and colours, Vassilena's musical expression is wide-ranging in sound and relief. Currently, she is making a tour in France with her new spectacle ¡°Rhapsodie Plan¨¨te¡± together with Sara Mangano and Pierre Yves Massip ¨C mime and danse (produced by les Jeunesses Musicales de France); she is working of the creation of a new spectacle ¡°Contre temps¡± with the company ¡°La Hulotte¡±, as well as a new audio ¨C visuel project with Pasquale Calone and Coralie Maniez (issue from the project Pyxis) and this complex universe between the arts is one of the most important inspirations for Vassilena.

Performing as a soloist, in jazz-classical duo with one of the most talented young pianists in France ¨C Thomas Enhco, and in different chamber ensembles and orchestras, Vassilena's musical ideas and artistic visions captivate audiences all over the world. Several young composers are working of new pieces dedicated to Vassilena which will be premiered in the prestigious Salle Gaveau in Paris during the next season.
