Tibor Kerekeš

"The Adams A9L trumpet it's a really great horn, perfect for my crossover projects and studio work"

Tibor Kerekeš was born to Hungarian parents in Subotica (Vojvodina) in 1968. He began playing the trumpet at only nine years of age, which at that time was an unusually young age to start learning a brass instrument. While at primary and secondary school, he received first prizes in regional and state competitions.

After moving to Ljubljana in 1987, he gained a scholarship from the Slovenian Philharmonic, and one year later, when he was barely 20 years of age, was made a permanent member of the orchestra. The same year, he won an international competition for young musicians in Zagreb. One year later, he was awarded a Student Prešeren Prize, and he was soon appointed as the principal trumpet of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. After graduating from the Ljubljana Academy of Music in 1992 in the class of Anton Grèar, he enrolled for postgraduate studies with the same teacher. During this time, he also furthered his studies abroad with Pierre Thibaud and György Geiger. In 1991, he became an assistant at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, in 1998 he was appointed as an assistant professor, and in 2000 he became a full professor. He is also a member of the Slovenian Philharmonic Brass Ensemble.

In addition to teaching and performing with the Slovenian Philharmonic, Tibor Kerekeš is also active as a soloist and chamber musician. He has collaborated with the Slovenian, Maribor, Zagreb and Belgrade Philharmonics, the Montenegro Symphony Orchestra, and with various brass and string chamber ensembles in Slovenia and abroad. In his long career, he has had an opportunity to perform under celebrated international conductors such as Kleiber, Mehta, Muti, Simonov and Pehlivanian, as well as with the renowned Slovenian conductors Lajovic, Letonja, Horvat and Voltolini. He is also active as a studio musician, recording film music and various pop hits.

Tibor Kerekeš has recorded a number of notable compact discs: Musical Highlights of the Baroque with a baroque trio (organ, soprano, trumpet); Trumpet Concertos, Meeting (crossover cd) with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra; and Brilliant Baroque and SFBE with Slovenian Composers with the Slovenian Philharmonic Brass Ensemble.
