Stefano Canuti

Stefano Canuti holds the position as 'William Waterhouse International Chair in Chamber Music and Bassoon' at the RNCM Manchester, England and is Bassoon Professor at the Conservatorio 'L. Campiani' in Mantua, Italy.

Stefano Canuti was born in 1961 in Parma, and got first acquainted with music at the age of nine, studying classical guitar. He started to play the bassoon only at sixteen. After five years of practice, and thanks to Ovidio Danzi’s teaching, he graduated summa cum laude. He soon got into the “Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra“ as principal bassoonist, and into the “Orchestra della RAI di Torino“. His restless nature and his resistance to routine made him embrace new and inspiring experiences: playing solo and chamber music soon became to him the main reasons for playing. These soloist experiences allowed him to perform in the most important concert halls in the world. Stefano has about ten soloist recordings to his credit, some of which (Fantasie di Bravura and Bassoon Images) have received esteemed credit and momentous awards.

His wish to play again some great symphonic music and his artistic maturity made him hold the role of princ. bassoon in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra directed by M° Claudio Abbado, and in the Symphonica Toscanini, directed by M° Lorin Maazel.

Canuti is also active teaching across Europe, the USA, South America and in China, currently holding masterclasses and the title of ‘Bassoon Chair’ at the Conservatorio di Musica “Campiani” di Mantova. In June 2003, Canuti was invited by M°Josè Antonio Abreu, as bassoon advanced teacher for the “Fundaciòn del Estado para el Sistema Nacional de las Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela“.

From 2006 thru 2012 Stefano Canuti was professor for bassoon at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon, Spain. In 2006 he was appointed professor at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, in 2010 he was given the “International Chair of Bassoon“, followed by the “William Waterhouse International Chair in Chamber Music and Bassoon“ in 2016.

In 2011 Stefano Canuti dedicated himself to Johann Sebastian Bach’s work and together with his pianist Enrique Bagaria recorded the Sonatas di Gamba.

When concerts and teaching let him, Stefano mounts on his beloved motorbike, to ride up and down the hills of his beautiful county.

Stefano Canuti is a Püchner Artist and performs on a Püchner bassoon model Superior.
