Pieter Nuytten

Pieter Nuytten is principal bassoon of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and teaches bassoon at the Conservatories of Rotterdam and Ghent.

Pieter Nuytten (° 1980) got his first bassoon lessons from Koen Coppé and studied bassoon at the conservatories of Antwerp, Cologne and Basel with Francis Pollet and Danny d'Haene (contrabassoon), Georg Klütsch and Sergio Azzolini.

He was a student at the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra (Japan) and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, conducted among others by Bernard Haitink, Ivan Fischer and Claudio Abbado.

After a trial as Associated Principal Bassoon at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Glasgow, Pieter became a solo bassoon player with the orchestra of the Opera of Rouen - Haute Normandie (Fr.) in 2004 and since 2007 he has been with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev. and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. As a solo bassoon player, he was a guest at ao. the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Hilversum, the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, the KBS Symphony Orchestra Seoul, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. During the 2014-2015 season, he was also a Solofagottist at the Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin.

He enjoys the interaction and intimacy of chamber music and had the opportunity to play with musicians such as Igor Roma, Nicholas Daniel, Jonathan Kelly, Priya Mitchell, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Alfredo Perl, Natache Kudritskaya and Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden. He has played at festivals in Osnabrück, Storioni Eindhoven, Nature et Musiques and Bauges (FR), Schiermonnikoog and Arbanasi (Bulgaria). He is a regular guest at the chamber music ensemble Oxalys and a founding member of the ensemble Focus and the Kölner Kammersolisten.

Pieter made his debut as a soloist in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in 2001. Since then he has played concert and concertos by Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, Weber and Peter Maxwell Davies.

In 2008 he played the bassoon concerto of Mozart with the Collegium Instrumentale Brugense. This concert was broadcast live on Radio Klara. His performance of Andante and Rondo Ungarese by Weber with the Brussels Philharmonic was also broadcast on Klara in December 2014. In 2016 he played the Duet Concertino by Richard Strauss with Marija Pavlovic and the Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen and later on during the Dubrovnik Festival 2016 with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra.

Pieter is principal teacher bassoon at the Conservatories of Rotterdam and Ghent, and gave masterclasses in Belgium, Linz, Seoul, Lima and Buenos Aires.
