Born in Manchester, UK in 1991, Matt began his musical career at just 5 years old on trombone, soon after switching to euphonium. At the age of 7, Matt performed to a 32,000 capacity crowd at Maine Road football ground, previous home to Manchester City football club, playing the club anthem Blue Moon.
In 2008, Matt performed Fields of Destruction by Peter Meechan with the Manchester University Wind Orchestra, despite only being 17 years of age. Soon after, Matt was granted unconditional offers for undergraduate study at the Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Birmingham Conservatoire.
Upon his arrival at the RNCM, Matt began working closely with composers, having a concerto written for him by student composer, Sophie Ryder. In March 2011, he performed the world premiere of the piece with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra, deemed a ‘fantastically successful performance’ by the composition lecturer, Prof. David Horne.
A year later, Matt won the RNCM Concerto Competition, performing David Gillingham’s Concerto for Euphonium, Winds and Percussion (Summer of 2008). He also performed as a soloist later that year at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Linz Austria, performing Peter Meechan’s Funk Theory with the RNCM Euphonium Ensemble.
In 2013, Matt flew to Thorn, Netherlands, to be signed as an Adams Brass Artist; currently the only one from the UK. In March, as a result of the RNCM Concerto Competition victory, Matt performed the David Gillingham Concerto with the RNCM Wind Orchestra in the Conservatoire concert hall. In June, he performed the UK Premiere of the Concerto for Euphonium by Robert Groslot, to an appreciative audience.
Matt has played in principal seats of various ensembles in the UK, including Brighouse & Rastrick Band, Wingates Band, Marsden Silver Band, Leyland Band, Hepworth Brass Band, Manchester University Wind Orchestra, and the North Cheshire Wind Orchestra. He has also played in theatre orchestras across the North West of England, as well as a function band operating within the city of Manchester, performing on trombone.
Matt has been teaching since the age of 16, working with students from beginner to postgraduate level. Extending his abilities across the entire brass family from trumpet to tuba, Matt not only conducts the Brass Ensemble at Xaverian College, Manchester, but also leads workshops and master-classes across the area.
