Marinus Komst studied percussion with Jan Labordus, then timpanist with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He also studied trumpet with his grandfather Marinus Komst, who was then principal trumpeter with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
In 1971, he embarked on a career as a timpanist with the Frysk Orkest (Frisian Orchestra), going on to join the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in September 1991.
Komst teaches percussion at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In his free time, he collects and restores timpani.
