Ali Ryerson

With a career spanning over four decades, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson consistently ranks among the top flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll. Born in 1952 in New York City, Ali grew up in a musical family. Her father, Art Ryerson, born in Columbus, Ohio, was a renowned jazz guitarist who got his start with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, and later became a top studio player in NYC for decades, recording with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker; Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra to Elvis Presley. Ali Ryerson carried on the family tradition, becoming an international touring/recording artist, with performances ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Blue Note (NYC and Japan), plus festival appearances worldwide. Ryerson has released numerous albums on major jazz labels (e.g. Concord Records, DMP, Capri, legendary jazz producer Bob Thiele’s Red Baron). Ryerson’s groundbreaking Jazz Flute Big Band, developed over the past 14 years, released their debut CD in 2013, Game Changer (Capri Records). The album hit the ‘TOP 10’ on the US Jazz Charts for six straight weeks.

Ali has recorded and/or performed with jazz greats such as Red Rodney, Roy Haynes, Kenny Barron, Frank Wess, Hubert Laws, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Stephane Grappelli, Mike Mainieri, and Joe Beck, as well as classical artists Julius Baker and Luciano Pavarotti (while principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Orchestra). Ali has been musical director of the Hudson River Regional Jazz Festival (2001-’04), NFA Jazz Chair (’05-’10) and Low Flutes Chair (current) of the NFA (National Flute Association), and founded the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band. As an educator/author, Ryerson published the widely acclaimed Jazz Flute Practice Method, has just released her Jazz Flute Masterclass DVD (Lessonface), is Professor of Flute at Sacred Heart University, and conducts master classes worldwide, including her week-long annual master class held at Hidden Valley Music Seminars in California, and an online master class series through LessonFace in NYC. As a composer, Ali has published numerous works for flute ensembles, many of which have premiered at NFA conventions. Ms. Ryerson studied flute with Harold Bennett (former principal flute w/Metropolitan Opera) and John Wion ((former principal flute w/NYC Opera), and received a BM in performance from the Hartt School of Music (Univ. of Hartford). Ryerson is a Gemeinhardt Artist with an Autograph Series of flutes.
Ali’s current recording project features the music of Brazilian composer/pianist, Manfredo Fest, with special guest, guitarist Phill Fest, the son of the late Manfredo Fest. The CD is due for release early 2017.
