Toon Fret

We are very pleased to be able to introduce you to the sympathetic Belgian flautist and pedagogue Toon Fret during this festival. Toon will give a fascinating lecture on the “Music of the Low Countries” and will lead an ensemble of his students from the Royal Conservatory in Liège on Friday during the Lunch break concert.

Toon Fret is known as the flutist of Oxalys and the Collectief, twe Belgian chamber music ensembles with an international reputation. Since 2011 he has formed a duo with pianist Veronika Iltchenko, with whom he has already recorded 2 CDs: Le temps retrouvé and Die Welt von Gestern.

Toon Fret attended his education as a flutist in Brussels, Maastricht, Paris and Basel with Gaby Van Riet, Michel Lefebvre, Barthold Kuijken, Ida Ribera and Peter-Lukas Graf. He is professor of flute and chamber music at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège, chamber music teacher at the Pôle d’Enseignement Supérieur de Musique de Bourgogne in Dijon and flute teacher at the Municipal Conservatory of Leuven.

Toon is active as a flutist and traverso player in various ensembles and orchestras at home and abroad. He has performed on the most important stages in Europe, America and Asia. His more than twenty CD recordings have been enthusiastically acclaimed in various international magazines such as Diapason, Classica or BBC Music Magazine.
