The Oboe in Music

The oboe is often a solo instrument, but in what genres of music can you find the oboe? Below, we offer some listening tips for beautiful oboe solos in classical, pop, and jazz music.

Classical Music

Swan Lake

London Philharmonic Orchestra with Ian Hardwick on oboe
There is one piece that cannot be overlooked when discussing traditional classical music: the oboe solo in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, performed here by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Ian Hardwick on oboe.

Mozart’s Concerto for Oboe

Heinz Holliger with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra
A combination of composer and oboist that cannot be overlooked is Mozart and Heinz Holliger. Heinz Holliger is one of the most renowned oboists in the world, while Mozart was one of the first composers to write a Concerto for Oboe.

Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C Major

Evelyn Rothwell with the Hallé Orchestra
Another well-known oboe concerto is the Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C Major. This piece was initially attributed to Haydn, but this has since been disputed. To this day, there is no definitive answer as to who composed this work. Evelyn Rothwell, later known as Lady Barbirolli, is the soloist in this performance. Listen to the Allegro spiritoso below.

Strauss’ Oboe Concerto

Alexei Ogrintchouk with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
We all know Richard Strauss from Also sprach Zarathustra and his operas Salome and Elektra. After World War II, he composed a famous oboe concerto. Compared to his earlier works, this piece is post-modernist. Alexei Ogrintchouk is currently one of the most renowned oboists in the Netherlands. He began playing with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 20 and, in 2005, joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Soundtracks

Gabriel’s Oboe

The 1986 film The Mission is one of the most successful Christian films of all time, but it is the soundtrack that is especially well-known to a wider audience. Gabriel’s Oboe is celebrated as an unforgettable oboe melody. Listen to Gabriel’s Oboe performed by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, conducted by Ennio Morricone.
