Chicago based, Grammy award winning sextet eighth blackbird, including Pearl/Adams artist Matthew Duvall, has received another four Grammy nominations for their new record "Lonely Motel". The album is a song cycle written by composer/electric-guitarist Stephen Mackey and singer, actor, and librettist Rinde Eckert. Drawn from the music for the theatre work "Slide", Lonely Motel was written specifically for eighth blackbird and their sonically intriguing instrumentation of wind, string, piano, and percussion. The piece was premiered by the ensemble at the 2009 Ojai Music Festival in Southern California.

eighth blackbird is a Chicago-based sextet that combines the finesse of a string quartet with the energy of a rock band. The ensemble regulary collaborates with various composers, young and old, modernist and indie. Recent commissions include Steve Reich's "Double Sextet", Jennifer Higdon's "On a Wire", and Steve Mackey's "Slide", and future collaborators include Amy Beth Kirstien, Brett Dean, Aaron Jay Kernis, John Luther Adams, and Mayke Nas. eighth blackbird holds ongoing Ensemble-in-Residence positions at the University of Richmond, and the University of Chicago, and has led short-term residencies at colleges around the country.
